Pet of the Week - Thirteen
Posted by Humane Society of Ventura County · March 24, 2025 4:36 PM · 1 reaction
Thirteen, a remarkable 23-year-old Gelding Paint horse, came to the HSVC as an owner surrender after his previous owner found themselves unable to afford his medical care. Upon arriving at the shelter, Thirteen quickly stole the hearts of the staff with his striking good looks and warm personality. He is not just smart and handsome; he is also incredibly versatile, capable of being ridden both with a saddle and bareback. This makes him an excellent choice for riders of all experiences, particularly for kids looking for a friendly and reliable companion in their equestrian activities.
Thirteen possesses a calm demeanor, which complements his adaptability. Regarding grooming, he is a champ in the washrack, displaying patience and a respectful attitude with his handlers. Moreover, he loads into a trailer smoothly, making travel a breeze. While he enjoys this active lifestyle, Thirteen will eventually need to get his shoes to keep him comfortable during rides and outings. Thirteen requires some ongoing maintenance and specific medical care because of his diagnosed navicular disease. To manage this condition effectively, he requires a tailored supplement called Equinox. He also needs some metabolic support to maintain his overall health and well-being. Despite facing these medical challenges, Thirteen’s spirit remains unbroken; he often trots joyfully around the pasture, showcasing his love for life and the freedom of running.

Pet of the Week - Otis
Posted by Humane Society of Ventura County · February 25, 2025 12:37 PM · 1 reaction
Meet Otis, a fluffy lovebug with a heart of gold. This gentle, handsome, 1.5-year-old soul is the easiest cat in the world to love. He's incredibly patient, endlessly talkative, and always up for a cuddle (or 10). Otis is the definition of a social butterfly: he gets along with other cats as long as they’re on his wavelength, respecting their boundaries and never resorting to hissing. In fact, Otis would rather share love than space, always choosing pets over food, toys, or even naps. He’s the chillest cat when it comes to grooming—brushes? Yes, please! Trimming his claws? A breeze. Even baths don’t phase him. When it comes to comfort, Otis is a pro at finding the perfect spot to nap, claiming any cozy corner as his own personal haven.
While Otis is the embodiment of sweetness, he’s also a big softie when it comes to affection. If he’s left alone too long, you’ll hear his little meows to let you know it’s snuggle time. His favorite toy is a wooden catnip ball that he can bat around with pure joy. Kind, silly, and a bit of a lap magnet, Otis is the kind of cat who will steal your heart without even trying. The world’s most loving companion, he’s proof that there’s no such thing as too much affection.

Pet of the Week - Venti
Posted by Humane Society of Ventura County · January 21, 2025 3:49 PM · 1 reaction
Meet Venti, a spirited and happy 1.5-year-old pup ready to bring her boundless energy and joy to an active home! Originally transferred from OC Animal Care in mid-November of 2023, Venti was placed into a foster-to-adopt home two separate times before ultimately returning to our care in mid-December due to no fault of her own. She was formally adopted shortly after her second return to the shelter. However, her adoptive home proved to not be the right fit for the rambunctious pup, and she was returned to the shelter a third time. This beautiful brindle medium mixed breed is now searching for her true forever family. With a love for outdoor adventures, Venti is the perfect companion for someone who enjoys staying active—she's always up for a run or a hike! True to her name, Venti's energetic, bouncy, fun-loving personality makes her a joy to be around, and she thrives on playtime with toys, making her a great fit for a household that can provide plenty of stimulation.

Pet of the Week - Letty
Posted by Humane Society of Ventura County · January 06, 2025 2:54 PM · 1 reaction
Five-year-old Letty is looking for her happily ever after! The pretty Labrador/Pit Bull mix was transferred to HSVC in early March 2024 from one of our partner rescues. A mama in her past life, Letty's puppies have already found their forever homes, and now it's Letty's turn! Our girl may be a little guarded at first, but the second she gets to know you, it's game over; you're her best friend. Letty is sweet, smart, eager to please, and likes to be the center of attention. Athletic and toy-driven, playful Letty enjoys running around HSVC's agility yard, jumping in the doggie pools, and loves to carry around her jolly ball. We think she would make an excellent adventure buddy for an active owner, as her battery is always full.

Pet of the Week - Mr. P
Posted by Humane Society of Ventura County · August 05, 2024 2:03 PM · 1 reaction
Meet Prieto, famously known as Mr. P by the HSVC team. This 28-year-old Quarterhorse came to the HSVC as part of a humane investigation in September 2023. His previous owner decided it was in Prieto's best interest to be surrendered to the shelter. He was severely emaciated, weighing only 776 lbs! He has come a long way in a short amount of time and is looking for his forever home.
Prieto is broke to ride and has been ridden, though he will need a refresher as it has been a while since he has been ridden. He's friendly overall but has a very strong personality. Though he is now gelded, Prieto spent most of his life as a stallion and will need an experienced owner who has the facilities and knowledge of a horse with his habits.
