Pet of the Week - Dahlia
HSVC is excited to share that Dahlia is now available for adoption! Six-year-old Dahlia has been residing at the HSVC since mid-January. The spunky mule was brought to the shelter by Humane Officers after they responded to a complaint regarding a female mule with severely overgrown hooves in unincorporated Ventura County.
Upon arrival at the property, our Officers saw the mule had “slipper foot”, a common condition in which an animal's hooves resembled elf shoes. After working with Senior Officer Utter, the owner made the decision that it was in the animal’s best interest to be surrendered to the shelter for proper care.
Our staff worked with Dr. April Armstrong and farrier Stacy Hyatt to get the mini mule the care she desperately needed. Having little to no socialization in her previous home, Dahlia is not able to handled easily and is often weary of humans. However, she is getting used to being touched when she is in a chute for humane interaction. The treat-loving mini donkey will need an adopter who is aware and understanding of her history with miniature mule experience.
If you are interested in adopting Dahlia, please contact Barn Manager Christina Malleck at [email protected] or call the shelter at 805-646-6505.
