Keeping Shelter Dogs Cool!

As temperatures rise, shady areas become a hot commodity at the shelter. With our kennels close to capacity more areas where animals and humans can rest and relax is essential to their health and safety. Animals can suffer from heat stroke and other heat related illnesses in a variety of ways and here at the shelter it is a top priority to make sure that all animals, volunteers, and staff keep cool during these hot summer months.

Doc is a darling male, Parson (Jack) Russell Terrier and Norfolk Terrier mix. He is about 3 years old, and he has been at the HSVC since May 06, 2015. Little Doc is a total sweetheart! He is good with people and other dogs, but we have not tested him around cats. His personality is as quirky as his looks! We do not have any background on Doc but he seems to be an all around great guy! If you are looking for a **Doctor... He's your guy!! Come meet Doc today!
**Doc has not yet attended medical school. However, he would make a fantastic Emotional Support Dog.

Heat Safety For Pets

Soaring temperatures can mean big trouble for animals. Heat related problems are some of the most common issues of summertime ailments. We are sure all our pet parents have heard this before, but it is vitally important to be aware of what heat can do to our loved ones!

We have something very special for all of you this morning. Two High School students from Besant Hill School in Ojai wrote, filmed, edited and starred in this short film entitled Salvation to benefit the Humane Society of Ventura County.

Fiona and Jasmine spent two weeks at the shelter gathering information, working with staff, and filming on location this short film for their Senior Capstone. They have since graduated (congratulations!) and returned to their respective homes in China and Taiwan. We are so thankful for this wonderful gift they created for us while they were here!

We had an exciting day here at the HSVC last Friday! We had a special delivery of what will be a brand new tunnel for our agility yard!

Boy Scout Jacob Fajardo has been working diligently on his Eagle Scout project that includes installing this monster tunnel (it weighs 500 lbs!) and a brand new dog yard too! He has been in scouts for ten years, starting at the rank of Wolf in Cub Scouts, all the way to today as a Life Scout. Now it is his goal to earn the rank of Eagle Scout, and this project is one of the requirements.

A very special thank you to Granite Construction for donating the large diameter drain pipe and to Ojai Lumber Company for bringing it over with the forklift to get it in the yard. And of course, to Jacob for organizing all of this!

The dogs are going to be so happy when it's done!

Thank you to everyone who attended our 83rd Birthday Celebration and Open House! It was great to see so many familiar faces (both human and canine), make new friends, and meet new supporters. It was a beautiful day out in Ojai, the perfect day to celebrate, and here at the shelter we have a lot to be thankful for!

A special thank you to our friends and supporters who helped put the event together and our volunteers who helped the event be a success! We had an arts and crafts table, where folks of all ages could design a bandanna for a shelter dog or make a bird feeder to take home. Our Humane Educator, Dawn Reily, was also there with her pack of critters for guests to hold, ask questions, and learn about the different services our education department offers. Humane Education became one of our main priorities in the late 80′s. We have visited thousands of school classrooms, children and youth organizations, service clubs and various functions promoting the protection of and kindness to all living beings and our environment. Children are never too young to learn respect for all life.
