As often as she is able, Maren is at the shelter in Ojai spending time with the dogs. She's been volunteering for over two years and mostly focuses on our big or shy dogs. Maren started volunteering after her German Shepherd passed away and wanted to find a way to continue working with dogs. She had donated to the HSVC for many years and decided that volunteering was something she wanted to do to help out.
Heat-related illnesses are some of the most common issues of summertime ailments for animals. Just like people, pets need time to adjust to the summer heat. Following are useful tips to keep your pets safe during the hot summer months.
Last week, after nearly eight months in the Shelter's care, three horses that had been rescued during the Woolsey Fire were reunited with their family. On November 10, 2018, one of three horses from a property in Malibu was found at the end of a driveway in Trancas Canyon where he was picked up by HSVC staff and the Orange County Sheriff's department and brought back to the Humane Society of Ventura County. The horse's owner was notified that his horse, Clark, was in our care and he informed us that there were two other horses from his property that had yet to be located.
Animal Adventure Camp, held at the Humane Society of Ventura County, is off to a fun and rewarding start. Campers, ages 9 – 13 years old, are getting experience with learning about dog behavior and working with Officer Tracy Vail on how to walk a dog on a leash, and training a dog to sit and stay. Christina Malleck, our equine expert, is teaching campers about the anatomy of a horse, and each camper gets to brush and pet the horses. Socializing with the dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens is a favorite activity for our campers and helps the animals too!
