Thank You Friends of the Shelter!

Here at the Humane Society of Ventura County we never imagined the level of kindness and support that would be shown to us amidst a disaster like the Thomas Fire.  As a small nonprofit with a staff of around 20 people the shelter was able to be at the forefront of animal rescue efforts throughout the county because of the tremendous support we received from across the nation.

Thank You Soul Horse!

Soul Horse, a private nonprofit located in Beaumont,Texas, was making a run to Colorado to assist a herd of horses in need when they first learned about the wildfires in Southern California. They immediately new they wanted to help and started making calls to see how they could offer their assistance to horses displaced by the raging fires. After some research they came across the Humane Society of Ventura County and hit the road with their truck and trailer out to Ojai.

Evacuee Cats Transported to Safety

This past Saturday Senior Humane Officer Tracy Vail and Humane Officer Kendra Winwood offered their assistance to Santa Barbara Animal Services to help transport 48 evacuee cats to the Santa Maria Animal Care Center. Due to the Thomas Fire the shelters in Santa Barbara were filling up quickly with animals being evacuated from the encroaching flames. The animals would need to remain within Santa Barbara County and so the transfer to Santa Maria was arranged.

Stray Horse Finds Comfort at the Humane Society of Ventura County

On Wednesday, December 13th, the Humane Society of Ventura County took in a older stray horse that had been found wandering in a field at Briggs and Foothill Road in Santa Paula. Two kind citizens in the area were able to load the horse into a trailer and transport him to our shelter in Ojai.

Each and every animal that has been brought to the Humane Society of Ventura County for safekeeping brings with it a story of hope and survival. These animals are in our care because in one way or another their lives and the lives of their families were threatened or in danger.

We are incredibly grateful to have Dr. Karen A. Moore DVM from Moore Veterinary Clinic donating her time and skills at the shelter. Dr. Moore met  with Shelter Director Jolene Hoffman and Kennel Manager Angela Hanline to make sure the animals in our care are in good health.
