Reminder! HSVC is CLOSED on July 4th!

By Humane Society of Ventura County

Reminder! The HSVC will be CLOSED on Tuesday, July 4th, in observance of the holiday. Services will resume on Wednesday, July 5th, at 10 am.  Check out these helpful tips to keep your furry friends happy and safe this Independence Day! Heatstroke: Temperatures in July can easily reach over 100 degrees. Provide all animals attending holiday festivities with access to the same comforts as your human guests. Remember that your pets don’t wear shoes, so make sure they stay off the hot pavement and concrete. Designate a shaded area for pets and provide plenty of fresh water at all times. Identification & Collar: Make sure your animal is always wearing an updated ID tag and secure collar. We recommend that you have your pet microchipped to help ensure the safe return of your pet if it ends up lost during festivities. We offer microchipping services for $25 including registration. We are also offering free ID tags now through July 8th to help prevent lost pets! Call the shelter at 805-646-6505 for details. Food & Drinks: Dogs left unsupervised can easily get into things that are potentially hazardous such as bones, twine, & toothpicks. Foods such as onions, avocados, grapes, and yeast dough can be very dangerous to your animal’s health. Keep alcoholic drinks away from your pets! For a full list of potentially dangerous foods for your pets, visit the ASPCA website. Insect Repellant & Sunscreen: Do not apply any insect repellant or sunscreen on your animal that is not specifically made for pets! Insect repellant with the ingredient DEET can cause neurological problems in your animal. Signs that your pet may have ingested one of these include drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst, and lethargy. Products such as Citronella candles and insect coils should be kept away from animals at all times.

ICAN Visits Ventura River Estuary for Last Class of the School Season

By Humane Society of Ventura County

Humane Education Youth programs— Imagining Compassionate Animal Neighborhoods (ICAN) recently went to the Ventura River Estuary with the first graders from Ventura Charter School. It was a beautiful May beach day and learners participated in an ICAN presentation about local birds. Learners explored the bird habitat at the estuary and tried to move and think like a bird. The learners were transformed and off they went noticing things from above as they were “flying” around. The learners also reflected on how to be empathic humans to help their bird friends in their local neighborhood beach.

After 284 Days, Chelsea Finds Her Forever Home!

By Humane Society of Ventura County

After 284 days at the shelter, 6-year-old Chelsea has finally found her forever home with Rosalie and Alex! Chelsea began her journey with the HSVC in early September of last year after she was surrendered in the field to our Humane Officers. Her sweet but highly energetic personality made it tricky to find her the right home. Alex and Rosalie first saw Chelsea on our website and instantly fell in love with the gorgeous German Shepherd. They visited the shelter to see if there was a connection with Chelsea, and the rest is history! We couldn't be happier for this deserving pup. Congrats and happy tails, Chelsea!
