ICAN Visits Ventura River Estuary for Last Class of the School Season

Humane Education Youth programs— Imagining Compassionate Animal Neighborhoods (ICAN) recently went to the Ventura River Estuary with the first graders from Ventura Charter School. It was a beautiful May beach day and learners participated in an ICAN presentation about local birds. Learners explored the bird habitat at the estuary and tried to move and think like a bird. The learners were transformed and off they went noticing things from above as they were “flying” around. The learners also reflected on how to be empathic humans to help their bird friends in their local neighborhood beach.

The HSVC's Humane Education program hopes to bring more outdoor classes like this to interested schools in the future. "The goal is to invite awareness and engage youth audiences by sharing updated information about the animals within our local neighborhoods. Going outside and learning about our wild and domestic animals neighbors can help us feel more connected to our animal, human and nature communities," said HSVC Humane Educator Angie Chupek Sagliani.
