The Humane Society of Ventura County Paws for Thought Fall Newsletter is now available online! Paws for Thought is a quarterly newsletter put out by the Humane Society of Ventura County and includes features on our volunteers, staff, and of course, the animals! Articles are written by our staff and include updates on our Humane Education program, Humane Officer cases, a Letter from the Director, tips on caring for your pets, upcoming events, and more. A medium sized dog costs $695 a year to care for, according to a survey by the ASPCA. Adopting a rescue dog is a rewarding experience that requires love, commitment and preparation, and being sure that you’re ready to cover all the costs that they incur is something potential new owners are encouraged to do before they begin the adoption process. While there are schemes in place to help pet owners care for their companions, setting out secure in the knowledge that you can cover medical expenses, pet insurance and food is essential before taking a new animal home with you.

Here at the Humane Society of Ventura County, we can't think of a better way to celebrate National Dog Day than supporting your local shelter. Every day countless dogs will find themselves in shelters through no fault of their own.
Often times orphaned animals, too young to survive on their own, are brought to shelters and rescues to be cared for. These young animals need around the clock care, and shelters rely on fosters to provide them with everything they need during this vulnerable time. When volunteer fosters are not available, our staff is always ready and willing to step up.
