Emergency Pet Safety - Be Prepared!
A wind-driven brush fire known as the South Fire broke out near Somis, CA along South Mountain over the weekend. According to VC Emergency, as of Monday, December 11th, the fire has burned approximately 2,715 acres and is 70% contained. The HSVC was closely monitoring the fire and was on standby with Ventura County Animal Services ready to assist those in need. Luckily, the Ventura County Fire Department has deterred the fire from homes and animals and no evacuation services have been needed at this time.
The outbreak of the South Fire is a reminder that an emergency can strike at any moment. Pet owners should have an emergency go-bag for their furry friends filled with important items they will need in the event they need to evacuate quickly. Such items include at least five days worth of food and water, medications and vet records, leash, collar, updated ID tags, harness, and photos of you and your pet together. We also recommend having a crate or carrier available - labeled with your name and contact information – to transport your animals and keep them safe. Don't forget to bring litter and a disposable litter pan if you have cats and spare poop bags for your dogs.
As a reminder, the HSVC becomes an evacuation center for your animals, including equine and barn animals, during states of emergency at no cost to pet owners. If you are in need of a safe haven for your animals, please call the shelter at 805-646-6505. We're here to help!
