Honoring Laurie Adams

The HSVC is proud to unveil a new addition to our shelter grounds in honor of late volunteer Animal Ambassador, Laurie Adams. Fellow Animal Ambassadors Linda Duval (left), Laurie McKnett (center), Carol Ramsey (right), and Carol Davis (not pictured) assembled the bench together to commemorate their beloved friend, who passed away peacefully on February 2nd, 2023, at the age of 70 from complications caused by cryptococcal meningitis. The seating area has plenty of space in front for dogs to sit at your feet, just as Laurie would've wanted it. It also features a beautiful willow tree courtesy of the Ventura Botanical Gardens, another organization dear to Laurie's heart.

A longtime educator and lover of the outdoors, Laurie began her journey with the HSVC after retiring from teaching first grade for the Ventura Unified School District in 2018. She had a special place in her heart for animals, particularly "underdogs", which led her to begin volunteering with the HSVC. Her passion for helping "underdogs" also led her to welcome a new addition into her family, 3-year-old Beau, whom she fell in love with during her time volunteering at the shelter. She and her husband Roger frequently took Beau and their other four-legged son, Luke, on cross country adventures.

"Laurie was the friendliest person that once you met her, you were friends for life. She was the biggest advocate for dogs. Always putting their best interest first. She would do whatever it took to find the right home and the right adopter for the right dog. She cared for every dog at the shelter like it was her own," said Linda.

Laurie will be deeply missed by the staff and volunteers at the shelter, but she will be missed most by the animals. Her legacy of kindness, patience, and compassion for animals in need will live on with this space for all to enjoy.
