Volunteer Spotlight - Barbara Golding

Our volunteers go above and beyond to care for the animals here at the Shelter. One such volunteer, Barbara Golding, is one of twenty Animal Ambassadors who helps around the shelter is a variety of ways. Her focus is on our dogs as well as helping out at various events and pack walks. Barbara started in February of 2014, which makes this her 5th year of volunteering at the Humane Society of Ventura County!

Barbara started to volunteer so she could have something to occupy her time once she stopped working. She and her husband had adopted from the HSVC before and so she decided to try out volunteering at the Shelter. She quickly fell in love with the Shelter and has been volunteering twice a week, sometimes more, ever since. She loves the animals, but also the staff and other volunteers, "The people here have the same likes and goals as I do, we want to help the animals."

While Barbara's favorite activity is to work and socialize the dogs, she takes pride in working with our shy and special needs dogs. Often, the shy or special needs animals are overlooked, but Barbara will spend her time helping these dogs trust her and giving them the time they need to overcome their fears. She has recently been working with two dogs, Bonnie and Mona Lisa, who came in extremely frightened. These dogs are now happy to sit in her lap and cuddle up to her and a few other volunteers.
Barbara has had many favorite dogs that she has worked with over the years. From Chance, a 5-year-old white miniature poodle with special needs, to Haylee, a 1-year-old Labrador Retriever and Queensland Heeler mix, who gave birth to 5 puppies at the shelter. These dogs needed the extra love and attention and Barbara was more than happy to give it.
When asked what she would say to those interested in volunteering, she quickly replied, "Do it! It's the most rewarding, relaxing, and special volunteer job." Barbara loves to work with the new volunteers and is always happy to answer questions and help out.

This is just one of the many volunteers who make a difference in our community. Our volunteers help us every day with the care of our animals, from dogs to horses, and we are very appreciative of their dedication.
