Unlikely Heros: How Mr. P Helped A Foster Kitten Recover

It's not every day we get to share a story of inspiration, collaboration, and recovery! The “R” kittens—Rabble, Rouser, Rascal, and Rowdy—faced a rough start when beginning their journey at HSVC, with Rabble battling a severe eye infection. Thanks to the innovative care of Director of Veterinary Services, Dr. Sisk, and a life-saving blood donation from Mr. P, one of HSVC’s horses, Rabble made a full recovery! This heartwarming tale of cross-species teamwork highlights the extraordinary lengths we go to for the animals in our care.

The adorable “R” kittens arrived at our shelter in late autumn during the tail end of kitten season. The tiny foursome faced serious health challenges early on. Rabble and Rouser, in particular, battled painful eye infections requiring constant care. Despite frequent cleaning and medicating, Rabble’s eye showed no signs of improvement, and her siblings continued to struggle with their own health issues.

After a few days in foster care, their devoted foster parent brought the kittens back to HSVC for further help. Dr. Sisk, our dedicated Director of Veterinary Services, took one look at Rabble’s eye and made an unusual decision: she needed to visit the shelter’s horses. Perplexed but trusting Dr. Sisk’s expertise, the foster parent and HSVC Foster Coordinator, Cheney, watched as Dr. Sisk embarked on this unexpected adventure. With the assistance of HSVC’s Equine Manager, Christina, Dr. Sisk drew blood from Mr. P, one of the shelter’s largest and most gentle horses. The next step was nothing short of remarkable—Dr. Sisk injected the serum from Mr. P’s blood into Rabble’s eye!

The bioactive elements in horse blood serum have extraordinary healing properties, including the ability to stimulate cell growth and regenerate corneal layers. Thanks to this groundbreaking treatment and Mr. P’s generous donation, Rabble made a full recovery. Today, Rabble’s once-damaged eye is bright and healthy, and she’s thriving alongside her siblings. She may be a kitten, but she’ll forever hold the distinction of being part horse, thanks to her equine hero, Mr. P.

We’re happy to report that Rabble and Rowdy have found their forever home together, but their siblings Rascal and Rouser are still patiently waiting. Stop by the shelter, 402 Bryant St. in Ojai, CA, if you are interested in adding these two warriors to your family! They’re available to meet new friends any time Monday - Saturday between 10 am - 4:30 pm.
