Help us Celebrate the Humans Behind the Shelter Doors
This week is National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week, and we're taking a moment to shine a well-deserved spotlight on the incredible humans behind the Humane Society of Ventura County. We are thrilled to honor the hardworking staff who make our mission possible every single day.
Since 1932, HSVC has been a safe haven for thousands of animals across Ventura County, offering love, medical care, and a do-over to those who need it the most. While every day is dedicated to the animals here, this special week gives us a chance to reflect on the people who help make the magic happen.
Every wagging tail, every soft purr, every joyful “gotcha day” moment, and every nicker from the barn begins with the love and dedication of our team. They care for the lost, the abandoned, the injured, and the misunderstood, providing each one with kindness, patience, and hope.
This week matters because, as an animal shelter, we do more than just care for and connect pets with their forever homes. We become community lifelines by reuniting lost pets with their families, offering low-cost spay/neuter and vaccine services, and providing education and resources to help keep animals safe and loved.
Animal welfare isn't easy work. It takes empathy, strength, and an unwavering belief in the power of fresh starts. Our team faces emotional challenges and some tough days, but through it all, their commitment never wavers. They celebrate every adoption, mourn every loss, and continue showing up because they believe in our purpose to promote the health, safety, welfare, compassionate care, and protection of all animals through education and community outreach.

This week, we would like to extend our gratitude not only to our team but also to animal welfare staff everywhere who dedicate their lives to helping animals find love and safety. National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week was founded by the Humane Society of the United States (now known as Humane World for Animals) in 1996 to acknowledge and appreciate the role of the humans behind every animal shelter in communities all over the country. This week honors the approximately 15,000-plus shelters and rescues across the country that provide care, compassion, and second chances to millions of animals each year.
At HSVC, we're proud to be part of that mission, serving as a non-profit care and compassionate center that relies on the generosity and kindness of our community to continue providing our vital services to those in need. However, it's the people behind the scenes, our staff, who bring that mission to life every single day.
To our HSVC team, including animal care, customer care, veterinary, development, finance, humane investigations, volunteers, and every hand and heart that make this place what it is, thank you! Your compassion changes lives every single day. You are the reason tails wag, paws heal, and hearts find their forever homes. We are endlessly proud of the work you do for this organization and are deeply grateful for the love you give to the animals and adopters.
Help us celebrate our team this week by showing your appreciation. You can join our family of volunteers and experience the joy of helping animals firsthand. Donate in honor of our staff or a volunteer who has touched your heart. Adopting is also one of the greatest ways to honor their work by giving a shelter pet the loving home they deserve.
Visit us at 402 Bryant St in Ojai anytime Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 4:30 pm, or visit our website to learn more about our team, our animals, and how you can support the mission they work so hard to fulfill. From our family to yours, thank you for helping us make Ventura County a more humane place for all.
