Don’t Judge a Dog by Its Bark: A Pittie PSA

At the Humane Society of Ventura County, we believe every animal deserves compassion and a fair chance at a happy life. Among the most misunderstood animals we care for at the shelter are Pit Bulls. Often unfairly judged by appearance or reputation, these dogs are some of the most loyal, affectionate, and playful companions you’ll ever meet. Unfortunately, decades of misinformation and fear-driven headlines have shaped a negative image that Pit Bulls simply don’t deserve. We're here to set the record straight!

Let’s start with the facts:

Did you know "Pit Bull" isn’t actually a specific breed? Rather, it's a general label used for dogs with specific physical characteristics, including American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, and similar mixed breeds. Because of this label, many of these dogs face breed-specific legislation, housing restrictions, and social stigma, regardless of their actual behavior. The truth is that Pit Bulls, like all dogs, are individuals. Their personalities are shaped by how they’re treated, trained, and loved. At HSVC, we’ve worked with countless Pit Bulls who are goofy, affectionate, eager to learn, and great with people and other animals.

What makes Pit Bulls so special?

Their big personalities and even bigger hearts! Pitties are loyal, affectionate, energetic, and smart. They love to play, love to learn, and above all, love to love. Many of the Pittie mixes we meet become quick favorites with our staff and volunteers for their silly antics and cuddlebug tendencies. Despite all these wonderful traits, they often wait longer than other breeds to be adopted simply because of their “Pit Bull” classification.

Debunking the myths surrounding Pitties:

There are plenty of myths surrounding Pit Bulls that need busting. One common misconception is that Pit Bulls are naturally aggressive. This simply isn’t true! Studies have shown no breed is inherently more aggressive than another. Like people, dogs respond to their environment and experiences. Another myth is that Pit Bulls have “locking jaws.” This is completely false—no dog breed has any mechanism in their jaw that locks. It’s a myth rooted in fear, not science. Perhaps the most heartbreaking myth is that Pit Bulls can’t be trusted around children or other pets. In reality, many Pit Bulls make fantastic family dogs and thrive in homes with kids, other dogs, and even cats, when properly introduced and trained.

At HSVC, we see beyond the stereotype that Pit Bulls encounter. We see the wagging tails, the gentle eyes, and the potential for these dogs to be someone’s best friend. That’s why we advocate not only for their adoption but also for education. The more people understand who Pit Bulls really are, the more lives we can change—for both dogs and the people who love them. If you’re ready to open your heart and your home, consider adopting or fostering a Pit Bull. If you can’t adopt, help us change the narrative by sharing the truth and dispelling the myths. Speak up against breed-specific legislation and support animal welfare policies that focus on behavior, not breed.

We’re working every day to give these incredible dogs the second chances they deserve. As part of our Pittie Pawlooza adoption special, the adoption fee for Pit Bull-type pups is completely waived through the end of June! Stop by the shelter located at 402 Bryant St in Ojai to meet our Pittie residents and see for yourself what makes them so lovable. Visiting hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 4:30 pm. You might just find your perfect match!
