Today is National Heat Awareness Day, which is observed each year right before summer begins on the last Friday in May. Here at the Humane Society of Ventura County the heat plays a serious role. As temperatures rise, shady areas become a hot commodity at the shelter. With our kennels close to capacity more areas where animals and humans can rest and relax is essential to their health and safety. Animals can suffer from heat stroke and other heat related illnesses in a variety of ways and here at the shelter it is a top priority to make sure that all animals, volunteers, and staff keep cool during the upcoming hot summer months.
The Humane Society of Ventura County is on 4.4 acres of land with few trees and temperatures that can soar into the hundreds. When temperatures get this high it is not comfortable nor safe to have dogs out without the proper shade, access to water, and areas to rest. Those volunteers brave enough to venture out into the heat to make sure the dogs get their breaks and limited exercise are in need of shelter as well. We hope to be able to provide items such as pools and create more shaded areas on the property so that the dogs can enjoy companionship and socialization outside of the kennels in a nice cool area. By donating today you can help our animals enjoy their summer safely and comfortably!
