Celebrate National Mutt Day!

July 31st is one of our favorite days of the year! It's National Mutt Day! This holiday is celebrated in the animal shelter industry each year to raise awareness for the many mixed-breed shelter dogs in need of loving homes. The HSVC is full of sweet, friendly, and adorable mutts who are patiently waiting for someone to see their potential. Today we spotlight these deserving pups to showcase what makes them so special!

There are so many benefits when adopting a mixed breed from a shelter! See below for just a few of the many reasons you should choose to adopt not shop.

  1. First and most importantly, you're saving a life! While the HSVC does not euthanize for space, many other rescues are often over capacity and are forced to euthanize animals simply because there is not enough space to house them. Adopting a mutt will free up kennel space in a shelter to give another deserving pup the chance to find their happily ever after.
  2. Mutts are often less prone to health issues related to inbreeding. Their diverse gene pool can lead to a more robust health profile and personality!
  3. Adopting a mixed breed pup from a shelter is much more affordable than purchasing a dog from a breeder. Our adoption fees range from $60-$150, and we often have adoption specials for even less! The adoption fee includes the first DHPP shot of the series (if age allows), a rabies vaccine (if age allows), a wellness check good for up to three days from participating veterinarians, implanting an identification microchip with registration, spay or neuter surgery, if necessary, as well as a collar, ID tag, and a leash.
  4. We love mixed breeds for their uniqueness! Shelter mutts have one-of-a-kind personalities and appearances due to their unique mix of breeds. This can make finding a pup that matches your personality and lifestyle easier.
