Morena is a Megastar!

We are thrilled to share an update for Morena! The 16-year-old American Quarterhorse was adopted by Jennifer and her daughter, Elisabeth, in late April and has been flourishing in her new home. Morena is one of several horses impounded in the field by our Humane Officers back in August 2022 as part of an abuse and neglect case. After almost one-and-a-half years, the case reached a resolution through the Ventura Superior Court. Both animal owners were charged with two Felony counts of Animal Neglect 597(b) PC. The victory against animal cruelty meant Morena was finally made available for adoption!

Jennifer was looking for a horse for her daughter, Elisabeth. They contacted our Equine Manager, Christina, for guidance in their search. They visited the shelter to find a horse that fit their lifestyle and instantly fell in love with Morena. Since the mare hadn't been ridden in a while, she needed a brief refresher course once out of the shelter. Her new family worked with a trainer to give Morena time to adjust to her new environment and the training to learn to trust again while being ridden.

"I am behooved to say that it is absolutely heartwarming to see Morena thriving and fulfilling her potential. She's been on such a long and difficult journey, yet she is now starting her most exciting adventure yet with her new family," said Senior Officer J. Utter. Thank you, Jennifer and Elisabeth, for giving Morena the life and love she deserves!
