Adopt A Horse Month Was A Success!

As May comes to a close, we’re celebrating an incredibly successful Adopt a Horse Month! This annual campaign, launched by the ASPCA’s Right Horse program in 2021, shines a light on the thousands of horses across the country looking for second chances. Thanks to our amazing community, four of our very own horses have found their forever homes, and three are currently in foster-to-adopt homes. Keep reading to learn more about where these lucky equines will be living out the rest of their lives!
First up, Prieto! Affectionately known as Mr. P, this 28-year-old Quarterhorse found his forever home when he was adopted by Chari. Mr. P's journey to this joyous ending began when he arrived at our shelter in the fall of 2023. He arrived in critical condition, severely underweight and neglected. However, with dedication from our team and equine medical care partners, Mr. P made a remarkable recovery, showcasing his resilience and unyielding spirit.
His adoption story is particularly heartwarming, as it resulted from a foster-to-adopt arrangement. Over time, Mr. P formed a beautiful bond not only with Chari but also with her other horse, Banche, creating a harmonious connection that flourished. Today, Mr. P is living his best life, embracing new adventures through enjoyable trail rides and truly thriving as a beloved companion to Chari. This transformation is a testament to the power of love and nurturing, as Mr. P has overcome his past to find happiness and stability in his new home.
Next up, we have Thirteen and Ariana, who found their forever homes thanks to the compassionate support of the Hogan Family Foundation. These two remarkable horses have been welcomed into a nurturing environment where they will be living alongside their fellow HSVC alums, Sadie Mae and Juniper, at the picturesque Rancho St. Francis. Thirteen, a gentle 23-year-old Paint horse, is thoroughly enjoying life amidst his new companions, a herd of miniature horses! Meanwhile, Ariana, a 16-year-old Egyptian Arabian, has successfully settled into her new surroundings and now shares her space with a friendly mule as her next-door neighbor.
This adoption not only represents a beautiful full-circle moment for these two beloved horses but also reinforces our gratitude for the Hogan Family Foundation. Thanks to their kindness, Thirteen and Ariana have a safe, loving, and supportive home where they can thrive and flourish. We are thrilled for their new beginnings!

On May 12th, we joyfully celebrated another incredible milestone adoption at our shelter. Canela, a spirited and affectionate mare with a captivating personality, spent nearly two years at our shelter. Her journey began in a heartbreaking way, as she was rescued as a newborn alongside her emaciated mother, Bella, during a harrowing abuse case that left a deep mark on all involved. Thanks to the tireless efforts and dedication of our remarkable staff and our invaluable veterinary partners, both horses overcame their challenging beginnings and made a remarkable recovery. Her case finally reached a resolution in May 2025, and the young mare was adopted by Elisabeth, the same kind and compassionate soul who adopted her beloved “sister” Morena, now Marina, in 2023.
During her time at the shelter, Canela grew into a confident, friendly mare, becoming affectionately known as the welcoming “barn greeter.” Her spirit and warmth touched the hearts of everyone who visited our facility. Now, as she embarks on a new adventure, she’s joined by her sister, Marina, in a loving and nurturing home, where she will continue to grow, thrive, and experience all the joys that life has to offer. We are truly grateful to Elisabeth and her family for opening their hearts and rescuing not just one, but two incredible horses, giving them a chance at a beautiful life together.
To everyone who made this month possible—those who adopted, donated, volunteered, shared our posts, or simply spread the word—we cannot thank you enough. Your support directly changes lives. We’re also deeply grateful to our partners, sponsors, and veterinary teams who provide the essential care and resources needed to prepare each horse for a successful adoption. While Adopt a Horse Month may be over, our work is far from done. There are still horses in need of homes, and we will continue our mission with the same passion and dedication every day. Let’s keep this momentum going—because every horse deserves a second chance, and together, we’re making that happen. Your support can truly make a difference by adopting, volunteering, fostering, or donating. To view our available horses, click the button below.
