The Hidden Perks of Adopting a Teenage Cat

At the Humane Society of Ventura County, we see firsthand how often teenage cats, those between 4 months and 2 years old, get overlooked in favor of tiny kittens or full-grown adults. However, the truth is that these “in-betweeners” have so much love to give and may be the perfect fit for your family. Teenage cats still have that playful, goofy kitten energy, but they’re starting to settle into the calmer rhythm of adulthood. That means you’ll enjoy the fun without quite as much chaos (and maybe fewer midnight zoomies).
By this age, a cat’s unique personality has begun to blossom. Whether you’re looking for a lap snuggler, a confident explorer, or a feather-wand fanatic, you’ll be able to see their quirks and temperament more clearly, making it easier to find the perfect match for your lifestyle. Most teenage cats already know the basics, like using the litter box. Many have grown out of the “chew on everything” stage, too. That means you get to spend less time on training and more time building a strong, loving bond. However, don’t let the word “teenage” fool you! Adopting a cat at this stage still means you’ll share many years of love, laughter, and companionship together.
Sometimes, cats come to us with a built-in best friend they are deeply bonded with. Adopting a bonded pair means double the love and double the fun, but not double the work. Bonded cats comfort one another, help ease transitions into new homes, and keep each other entertained when you’re away. Plus, you’ll get the joy of watching their lifelong friendship continue to grow. We have several bonded pairs looking to go home together at the shelter. They just need someone to take a chance on them!
Visit these cuties at HSVC (located at 402 Bryant Street in Ojai) anytime Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 4:30 pm. As an added bonus, we're now including our feline friends in our Deal of the Day adoption special. That means your adoption fee for a new pet will be the same as the date on the calendar! Visiting the shelter on the 10th? Adoption fees will be just $10, and so on. Don’t overlook these wonderful companions; they could be the perfect fit for your home!
Included with all cat adoptions is the first FVRCP shot in the series, a leukemia test (if age allows), rabies vaccine (if age allows), a medical exam good for up to three days from participating veterinarians, deworming, implanting an identification microchip, registration of microchip, spay or neuter surgery if necessary as well as a safety collar, ID tag, and a cardboard carrier.
