Baja’s Brave Next Chapter: Surgery Complete & Healing Strong

If you have been following since our clinic team's recent trip to Loreto, Mexico, then you know Baja! Our clinic team met the sweet 7-month-old on the first day of their trip, after she was abandoned at the shelter in Mexico. After further examination, Baja's X-rays revealed she was suffering from a diaphragmatic hernia and a fractured leg, injuries most consistent with being hit by a car. Knowing the extensive care she would need wasn't accessible locally, Dr. Sisk and the team decided to bring Baja back to the US for treatment. We are excited to share an update on this tiny but mighty pup and the incredible progress she's made since coming to HSVC.
On Thursday, December 11th, 2025, brave little Baja underwent a complex, life-saving diaphragmatic hernia surgery. The procedure required expert collaboration, and we are deeply grateful to the compassionate veterinary professionals at Oaks Veterinary Urgent Care, Dr. Rachel Wallach and Dr. Carin Ferdowsian, for coming together to give Baja the best chance at recovery. While the surgery was complicated, we're thrilled to report that our fearless girl came through it beautifully.

Following surgery, Baja required intensive postoperative care and spent 48 hours in an oxygen chamber while her body healed. During this critical time, HSVC Lead Vet Tech Samantha Velasquez stayed with her overnight for 2 nights in our clinic to ensure Baja was never alone and closely monitored her throughout her recovery. Once she was stable enough, Baja headed home with Sam to continue healing in foster care, where she has been resting comfortably and soaking up all the love.
Baja will continue to recover while awaiting further evaluation of her fractured leg, and we'll share more updates as she takes her next steps forward. From a frightened, injured puppy with uncertain odds to a resilient survivor surrounded by care, Baja's journey is a powerful reminder of what compassion, collaboration, and dedication can achieve.
Baja's life-saving care was made possible because of generous supporters who believe every animal deserves a chance, no matter where they come from. If you'd like to support Baja's ongoing recovery and future clinic missions like the one that brought her to us, please consider donating to HSVC. Your support helps provide emergency medical care, surgery, foster support, and second chances for animals who need it most. Together, we can continue turning heartbreak into hope, one life at a time.
