Animal Adventure Camp Online! Register Today!

Calling all animal lovers! Due to COVID-19, the HSVC will be hosting our annual summer camp online this year! Animal Adventure Camp at Home is an alternative to traditional onsite camp activities, offered by using various video conferencing and online platforms.

How it Works

We developed a week-long program operated by the Humane Society of Ventura County (HSVC), for campers to participate through video conferencing. Scheduling of programs for the camp will be provided before sign-ups. Live programming will occur from 9 am to 12 pm, Monday through Friday, with scheduled offline break times to avoid screen fatigue. The camp will run for 4 weeks, with slight variations in programming week to week. Sign-ups are necessary for each week. Campers should experience 1 week before signing up for multiple weeks.

Activities are made to allow ages 7 through 12 to participate, with a maximum of 15 campers per week. Although our focus is on activities that allow campers to work independently, we encourage families to participate. Each activity will be led by the Humane Educator with appearances by HSVC staff, dedicated volunteers, animal ambassadors, and of course the shelter animals. There will be a combination of online and offline activities available after signing up. Live programming or pre-recorded programming is from 9-12 pm.

Due to the COVID-19, HSVC chose to model this virtual program FREE of any cost but with a donate-if-you-can initiative. Supplies and instructions needed for the activities will be shared on Google Classroom to help families to gather materials they need for the week’s activities. Here is a list of the necessary supplies for campers: a device with internet capabilities, supplies to make animal-themed crafts, and a Gmail (non-school) email or a Facebook account. We will utilize free tools such as Google Classroom or Facebook Private Group, Gmail, Zoom, Kahoot, Flipgrid. If you are not able to gather materials for whatever reason, please let us know and we will provide a camp in a box, full of materials the camper will need to participate. You must let us know when you register if you need a camp in a box. Staff will have boxes available for contact-free pick up at the shelter upon request.

During this time, we have developed partnerships with other nonprofit organizations. Currently, three organizations have solidified their participation in our virtual camps, The Friends of the Island Fox, California Wildlife Center, and SeeAg. With the help of these organizations, our goal is to educate the youth in wildlife and environmental stewardship, all leading to the overarching theme of being kind to animals and the environment. Hopefully, we can connect as a camp community to build new virtual friendships, have fun playing games, and learn more about the animals we love. We can’t wait to see campers at our Animals Adventure Camp at Home Edition!
