May is Adopt a Horse Month!

Adopt a Horse Month was introduced in 2021 by the ASPCA Right Horse program, and it has been gaining popularity ever since. The program aims to help horses find suitable homes with the right individuals. May is considered one of the best times to promote adoptable horses to those who are looking to add another horse to their family. This is because equestrians begin to focus on shows, trail rides, and other activities after being cooped up during the winter months. Adopt a Horse Month supports equine rescue groups nationwide that work tirelessly to find safe and loving homes for the horses in their care.

Prieto also referred to as Mr. P, came to the HSVC as part of a humane investigation. His previous owner decided it was in Prieto's best interest to be surrendered to the shelter. He was severely emaciated, weighing only 776 lbs! He has come a long way in a short amount of time and is looking for his forever home. He will be gelded before going to his new home.

Prieto is broke to ride and has been ridden, though he will need a refresher. He's friendly overall but has a very strong personality. Though he is now gelded, Prieto spent most of his life as a stallion and will need an owner who has the facilities and knowledge of a horse with his habits.

Tundra is a 16-year-old Grey Arabian gelding. He was brought to the Humane Society of Ventura County on December 23, 2022, by our Humane Officers as part of an abuse and neglect case. He is green broke and has had a saddle on. He needs groundwork and would benefit from more training with an experienced owner. He has a sweet personality and no medical issues.

Ariana is a gorgeous 16-year-old Egyptian Arabian mare who was surrendered to the shelter in late December 2023 after her previous owner could no longer care for her. Our staff adores her sweet face and even sweeter personality! She's a very special girl due to her lack of teeth, but that doesn't stop her from doing the things she loves!

She is not trained to ride, but Ariana has great ground manners and aims to please her handler. Ariana has had a saddle on before, but she is not broke to ride. However, this pretty girl knows how to lunge in the round pen and gets along with most other horses. We think she would make a great pasture buddy!
