Browsing for Love, This Pittie Just Needed a Weekend Off

By Humane Society of Ventura County

Meet Browser—a gentle, goofy 4-year-old Pittie mix who just returned from a week in foster care, and we can’t stop smiling about it. During his weekend getaway from the shelter, Browser absolutely thrived. He soaked up every second of couch time, cuddles, and calm companionship with his wonderful foster family. The verdict from his foster family? He’s a total gem! Browser isn’t high-maintenance, he’s content with a peaceful walk full of sniff breaks and then settling into a cozy corner for a long nap. His foster family shared that he’s incredibly loving, laid-back, and easy to be around. This boy is a true couch companion who’s happiest when he’s close to his people! He also gets along beautifully with other dogs and has a sweet, soulful way of connecting with everyone he meets.

Don’t Judge a Dog by Its Bark: A Pittie PSA

By Humane Society of Ventura County

At the Humane Society of Ventura County, we believe every animal deserves compassion and a fair chance at a happy life. Among the most misunderstood animals we care for at the shelter are Pit Bulls. Often unfairly judged by appearance or reputation, these dogs are some of the most loyal, affectionate, and playful companions you’ll ever meet. Unfortunately, decades of misinformation and fear-driven headlines have shaped a negative image that Pit Bulls simply don’t deserve. We're here to set the record straight!

HSVC Celebrates 93rd Birthday!

By Humane Society of Ventura County

What a magical evening at the Humane Society of Ventura County's 93rd Birthday Bash! For the third consecutive year, we were thrilled to welcome guests to our shelter for an unforgettable night of celebration, storytelling, and giving back to the animals we love. From heartfelt adoption stories to exciting auctions, this year’s event was a beautiful reflection of the compassion and community spirit that defines HSVC. Thanks to your incredible support, we raised over $104,000 for our furry friends in need!     Above, left to right: Rocky, Winston, Hank, Pepper, & Letty  The evening began with a lively cocktail hour where guests were warmly greeted by our “welcome wag-on” of shelter dogs Rocky, Winston, Hank, Pepper, and Letty. Along with their volunteer handlers, these furry ambassadors set the tone for a joyful and heartfelt night. Guests were invited to explore inside our new mobile Pet Wellness Clinic, visit with sponsors, and try their luck at the silent auction and wine pull. The outdoor space buzzed with excitement as attendees were offered complimentary snacks and beverages, connected with fellow animal lovers, and got a glimpse at the work HSVC does year-round.      Once seated for dinner, HSVC Executive Director Tim Blaylock and Board President Ron Schmidt welcomed attendees and shared a few words about HSVC's mission. They then introduced our fabulous emcee, Kimberly Hunt, who helped carry the evening forward with warmth and enthusiasm.     Above, left center: Board President Ron Schmidt. Above, right center: Asst. Sheriff Andrew Salinas (Auctioneer), Kimberly Hunt (Emcee), and Tim Blaylock (HSVC Executive Director) One of the evening’s most touching moments came with the introduction of our first special guest, Fenix Lumiere, a rescue pup with a powerful story of resilience and hope. Once at risk of euthanasia due to a neurological disorder, Fenix has become a beacon of love and joy, thanks to the devotion of his parents, Dr. Zoe and Eric Lumiere. Dr. Zoe's testimonial reminded everyone of the life-changing impact of second chances, while Eric's performance tugged on the heartstrings of our guests.    The silent auction came to a close as guests enjoyed a catered buffet dinner, building excitement for Assistant Sheriff Andrew Salinas to kick off the live auction. This portion of the program featured packages including a Paso Robles wine country escape, an Ojai Valley Inn stay with golf for two, and a vacation to Orlando, Florida. Each item brought friendly bidding wars and joyful winners, all in support of our shelter animals!     Following the auction, Kimberly invited our next special guest, Dianne McKay, to the stage. Dianne shared her adoption journey with Everest, a senior dog who had been at HSVC for over 420 days before finally finding her forever home. Dianne’s touching story moved many to tears and inspired even more generosity. After Everest’s story, auctioneer Andrew Salinas returned to the stage to lead the paw raise, encouraging guests to pledge a donation in support of the daily care, medical needs, and love we provide for every animal at HSVC.    To wrap up the night, Kimberly introduced our youngest special guest, Waylan Tolmie. At just 12-years-old, Waylan’s compassion and talent stole the show. Born and raised in Ojai, Waylan grew up caring for animals, including a retired racehorse, a rescued bearded dragon, and two dogs (one from HSVC!). Her moving musical performance reminded us all of the power of kindness and the importance of community. As the evening came to a close, guests were invited to indulge with a treat from the dessert bar, sip coffee and tea, and collect their auction winnings. Each table centerpiece included a special token of appreciation to take home, a sweet reminder of a night that was equal parts celebration and purpose.    Above, Left: Birthday Bash Committee Chair Debbie Guerra and her husband, Ed Guerra Thanks to the generosity of our donors, sponsors, and supporters, we exceeded our fundraising goals and, most importantly, created a ripple of hope for the animals in our care. We are deeply grateful to everyone who helped make our 93rd birthday the best one yet. To Debbie Guerra, our Committee Chair and HSVC's Director of Development, Amber Landis—thank you for being the heart and soul behind this year’s event. We couldn't have done it without you. Here’s to another year of compassion, rescue, and second chances! We look forward to seeing you next year!

Empowering Dogs Through Playgroups With DPFL

By Humane Society of Ventura County

Last week, we had the privilege of hosting Dogs Playing for Life (DPFL) for an intensive, hands-on training focused on the life-changing power of dog playgroups. This multi-day training was designed specifically for our staff and volunteers, and it delivered more than just valuable skills; it reinvigorated our commitment to providing the best behavioral support and enrichment for the dogs in our care. Leading the training were Max and Kylie, DPFL’s Lead Trainer and Presenter, both of whom brought deep expertise, contagious enthusiasm, and a genuine passion for helping dogs thrive in shelter environments. Under their guidance, our team learned how to safely and effectively introduce dogs to one another, interpret canine body language, and manage playgroup dynamics to ensure safe and enriching interactions. Their instruction emphasized that playgroups aren’t just about giving dogs time to play; they’re an essential tool for understanding a dog’s behavior, reducing kennel stress, and helping dogs become more adoptable. Over several days, Max and Kylie led our team through a combination of classroom-style learning, live demonstrations, and hands-on work with dogs in the play yard. Staff and volunteers were able to observe dogs in different stages of social comfort, learning how to assess readiness, monitor body language, and make thoughtful decisions to support each dog. Watching shy or reactive dogs come out of their shells, engage with their peers, and experience joy in the yard was truly inspiring.
