Valentine's Day Pet Safety

By Humane Society of Ventura County

Valentine's Day is just around the corner and love is in the air! As many prepare to shower their loved ones with gifts and quality time, we want to remind pet owners of the dangers of this romantic holiday. Check out these tips to keep your pet safe as you spread the love! Chocolate: While chocolate can make a sweet gift for special someone, it can be extremely toxic to furry friends. Chocolates can cause vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, seizures, and an abnormally high heart rate if consumed by a dog or cat. Some chocolates contain additional fillings, which can increase the risk of pancreatitis in your animals. Be sure to keep all chocolate out of reach of your animals while you indulge this Valentine’s Day. Flowers: Nothing says "I love you" more than a gorgeous bouquet of flowers. Unfortunately, many mixed bouquets contain flowers that can be fatal to pets. Lilies are extremely harmful if ingested by cats and can cause acute kidney failure. If you have a curious pet, be sure to request a bouquet without toxic flowers to avoid a Valentine's Day vet visit. Alcohol: Adult beverages often accompany a romantic meal. While humans can enjoy a nice glass of wine with dinner, the consumption of even a small amount of alcohol can cause great harm to our furry friends. Be sure to keep open glasses out of reach of your animals to prevent a Valentine’s Day disaster. Marijuana: Since the legalization of marijuana in many states, exposure cases in animals have increased exponentially. Marijuana can often be disguised as a tasty treat that can seem tempting to pets. Keep these products in a secure location like a high shelf or cabinet to be sure your pet doesn’t get into them. Bath Bombs: A long, relaxing bath can be heavenly for humans. However, the residue left in the tub from a bath bomb can cause upset stomach and irritation if consumed by a pet. Make sure your tub is thoroughly rinsed out when you are finished to keep your animals safe.

Thank You Rhea and Jaden!

By Humane Society of Ventura County

A heartfelt thank you goes out to Rhea and Jaden, two students from Foothill Technology High School, for their donation to the shelter! The pair of National Honor Society students recently visited HSVC to drop off pet food, supplies, and a monetary donation to benefit animals in need. We appreciate their generosity so much! As members of the National Honor Society, Rhea and Jaden were tasked with a service project of their choice. The animal-loving students immediately thought of the Humane Society and hosted several fundraisers to raise money for our shelter animals. They also reached out to local businesses to collect items like treats and toys. Way to go Rhea and Jaden!

Oak Grove School Tours HSVC

By Angie Sagliani

The Humane Society of Ventura County recently had the privilege of hosting a tour for students from Oak Grove High School in Ojai. The visit provided students with information about HSVC’s animal shelter, the jobs needed to run our organization, our mission, volunteer opportunities, and the pressing issue of animal overpopulation. Another crucial point emphasized was the immense significance of community involvement in the collective efforts to provide care for animals in need. Students were given the opportunity to interact with animals that were ready for gentle hands and after the tour, the students were invited to reflect upon their experience. Their takeaways were beautiful and insightful. In a heartwarming display, an alumnus & animal lover from Oak Grove School, who is also the owner of the company Springer, made a generous donation of dog travel bottles to HSVC. Thank you for providing a practical and thoughtful contribution to the organization! If you would like an informational youth tour, please contact me, Angie Sagliani, at [email protected]. If you would like to make an in-kind donation or tour the shelter please contact Steve McCurry, Community Development Manager, at 805-299-6351 or [email protected].

The Green Valley Project (GVP), an initiative of The C.R.E.W, saw a productive discussion at the beginning of the new year involving GVP Project Manager Tara, Scott, and his team from Local Flora Landscapes, along with the Humane Education for Youth (H.E.Y) department at HSVC. The discussion centered around the health and condition of the pollinator garden situated prominently in front of the shelter property on Bryant Street. The Pollinator Garden Project at HSVC commenced two years ago intending to attract more pollinators to the 4.4-acre shelter property in Ojai.
