Maya Gets Adopted!

By Humane Society of Ventura County

We are thrilled to share that long-term resident, Maya, has finally been adopted! After nearly one year at the shelter, she has found her happily ever after with Ann and Angela! Many are familiar with Maya's story. The 4-year-old Pit Bull Terrier was surrendered in the field to our Humane Officers in early March of 2023. She arrived with two of her puppies, and a third was surrendered shortly after their arrival. All three of Maya's babies quickly found homes, but Maya wasn't so lucky. Her loud, excited bark and strong pull on a leash often deterred potential adopters from choosing her. But her positive spirit and happy personality remained as she patiently waited for someone to take a chance on her.  Cut to just two weeks ago when Ann and Angela decided to visit the shelter on a whim to possibly foster or adopt an animal. They spotted Maya in her kennel and were drawn to her adorable puppy dog eyes and friendly smile. After hearing how long she had been at the shelter, Ann and Angela knew they needed to give Maya the loving home she deserved. Our staff was holding back tears of joy as they said goodbye to Maya and sent her off with a new toy and lots of love!  According to Angela and Ann, Maya immediately made herself at home in her new environment. Though the situation was still just a foster-to-adopt, it didn't take long for Maya to claim her space in the house as if she was already an official member of the family. "After arriving home, Maya located her new favorite spot by the window to observe birds gliding overhead, monitor neighbors' activities, and bask in the sunlight. She slept most of the day and through the night before showering me with energetic and loving kisses the next morning," said Angela.  Maya now spends her days napping in a cozy corner, going for daily strolls, and of course, lots of belly rubs. We couldn't think of a more perfect home for our girl. Thank you, Angela and Ann, for taking a chance on Maya!

Baker's Journey

By Humane Society of Ventura County

Baker has come so far since he first came to the HSVC! The 2-year-old Miniature Poodle was brought to the shelter as a stray in early February after he was discovered wandering along the highway. He was found very underweight and extremely matted with large patches of missing hair and overgrown nails. Baker also had infections in his eyes, ears, and paws. Despite his condition, Baker remained a happy, friendly boy who was just excited to be getting attention. Our Clinic and Animal Care staff quickly went to work treating the energetic pup after his arrival. He seemed very grateful to have his matts shaved off and greatly enjoyed spa treatments of medicated baths and foot soaks. We're happy to share Baker's eye, ear and paw infections have resolved, but it will take more time for his coat to come back to normal. Until then, Baker will be rocking sweaters to keep warm and will likely need continued medicated baths and possible medication in the future.

Ariana is now available for adoption!

By Humane Society of Ventura County

Ariana is a gorgeous 16-year-old Egyptian Arabian mare who was surrendered to the shelter in late December 2023 after her previous owner could no longer care for her. Our staff adores her sweet face and even sweeter personality! She's a very special girl due to her lack of teeth, but that doesn't stop her from doing the things she loves! She is not trained to ride, but Ariana has great ground manners and aims to please her handler. Ariana has had a saddle on before, but she is not broke to ride. However, this pretty girl knows how to lunge in the round pen and gets along with most other horses. We think she would make a great pasture buddy! If you would like to add Ariana to your equine family, contact our Equine Manager, Christina Malleck, at 805-364-1150 or via email at [email protected] to schedule an appointment to meet her. Please note that horses at the shelter are viewable by appointment only.

Local Artist Renn Bird Captures Essence of Flicka

By Humane Society of Ventura County

The HSVC would like to give a heartfelt shoutout to local artist Renn Bird for painting this gorgeous portrait of our beloved shelter resident, Flicka! Renn was inspired by the German Shepherd's story and created this one-of-a-kind painting to capture her lovable personality.  We are thrilled to display it at the shelter! Thank you, Renn Bird! Five-year-old Flicka has been at the shelter for over 550 days. She arrived in August of 2022 as part of an abuse and neglect case. Several of the other animals involved in her case have since been adopted, but our girl Flicka is still patiently waiting! Renn Bird heard about Flicka's journey to find her forever home and wanted to lend his skills to help Flicka's cause. The shelter itself is also near and dear to Renn, as he attended summer camp at HSVC when he first moved to Ojai as a child.

Donate Your Old Vehicle to Benefit Animals in Need!

By Amy King

Did you know you could donate your old clunker cars to benefit animals in need? It's true! Vehicle donations to the Humane Society of Ventura County have the potential to bring hundreds and sometimes even thousands of dollars in support of our programs. Donating is easy, the pick-up is free, and your gift is tax-deductible. Here's how it works: Contact: Reach out to our vehicle donation partner, Charitable Adult Rides & Services (CARS), at 855-500-7433 or fill out the online car donation form and designate the Humane Society of Ventura County as your selected charity. The CARS Vehicle Donation Support team is available seven days a week to support you every step of the way. Schedule your free pick-up: CARS arranges to have a licensed tow company pick up your vehicle at a time convenient for you. The vehicle will be taken to one of our many sale locations where it will be sold—all at no cost to you. HSVC receives the funds: Our shelter will receive a cash donation in the amount of your vehicle's worth and you could qualify for a tax deduction! Vehicle donations are tax-deductible, and CARS works to get the highest return per vehicle for us and for your tax benefit. In most cases, when the driver arrives for your tax-deductible gift, you’ll be provided with the donation receipt. CARS will mail a thank-you letter within 30 days of the sale of the vehicle, which also serves as a donation tax receipt. We accept all types of vehicles that meet the following basic requirements: The vehicle has a clear title. The vehicle is in one piece. The vehicle is accessible for safe towing. The vehicle does not need to be running.
