Hoppy Easter! Keep your pets safe with these holiday tips

By Humane Society of Ventura County

Four-year-old Odie would make an eggcellent addition to any family Easter holiday! From bunny-clad egg hunts to festive sweet treats, this weekend is sure to be a blast! Check out these tips and tricks to keep your animals safe and hoppy this Easter! Bunnies, chicks, and ducks: These cuties should not be looked at simply as a festive Easter toy. Rabbits can be very destructive if not provided with the proper care and chickens and ducks can live up to 10 years! This holiday is an opportunity to teach children how to humanely treat animals and the responsibilities of becoming pet parents. Candy: All candies, chocolates, wrappers, and sugar products should be kept away from your animals as they are potential hazards. Theobromine, a chemical found in most chocolate, is poisonous to pets. Easter eggs (plastic and real): Plastic eggs can be a choking hazard and can cause serious damage if consumed due to their inability to be digested. Boiled eggs, especially those still in the shell, can cause an upset stomach or constipation. Be sure to count the eggs in your egg hunt to ensure they are all collected and out of reach of pets. Synthetic grass & tinsel: Both synthetic grass and tinsel can become entangled in the intestines if ingested. If not caught in time, this may be fatal for your pets. Easter lilies: Lilies are extremely dangerous to pets, especially cats. Every part of the lily is highly toxic and eating just one leaf can result in kidney failure and even death. Raw dough: Keep any items containing yeast or uncooked dough away from your pets. If consumed, it can ferment and become poisonous in their stomachs.

Maya Gets Adopted!

By Humane Society of Ventura County

We are thrilled to share that long-term resident, Maya, has finally been adopted! After nearly one year at the shelter, she has found her happily ever after with Ann and Angela! Many are familiar with Maya's story. The 4-year-old Pit Bull Terrier was surrendered in the field to our Humane Officers in early March of 2023. She arrived with two of her puppies, and a third was surrendered shortly after their arrival. All three of Maya's babies quickly found homes, but Maya wasn't so lucky. Her loud, excited bark and strong pull on a leash often deterred potential adopters from choosing her. But her positive spirit and happy personality remained as she patiently waited for someone to take a chance on her.  Cut to just two weeks ago when Ann and Angela decided to visit the shelter on a whim to possibly foster or adopt an animal. They spotted Maya in her kennel and were drawn to her adorable puppy dog eyes and friendly smile. After hearing how long she had been at the shelter, Ann and Angela knew they needed to give Maya the loving home she deserved. Our staff was holding back tears of joy as they said goodbye to Maya and sent her off with a new toy and lots of love!  According to Angela and Ann, Maya immediately made herself at home in her new environment. Though the situation was still just a foster-to-adopt, it didn't take long for Maya to claim her space in the house as if she was already an official member of the family. "After arriving home, Maya located her new favorite spot by the window to observe birds gliding overhead, monitor neighbors' activities, and bask in the sunlight. She slept most of the day and through the night before showering me with energetic and loving kisses the next morning," said Angela.  Maya now spends her days napping in a cozy corner, going for daily strolls, and of course, lots of belly rubs. We couldn't think of a more perfect home for our girl. Thank you, Angela and Ann, for taking a chance on Maya!

Baker's Journey

By Humane Society of Ventura County

Baker has come so far since he first came to the HSVC! The 2-year-old Miniature Poodle was brought to the shelter as a stray in early February after he was discovered wandering along the highway. He was found very underweight and extremely matted with large patches of missing hair and overgrown nails. Baker also had infections in his eyes, ears, and paws. Despite his condition, Baker remained a happy, friendly boy who was just excited to be getting attention. Our Clinic and Animal Care staff quickly went to work treating the energetic pup after his arrival. He seemed very grateful to have his matts shaved off and greatly enjoyed spa treatments of medicated baths and foot soaks. We're happy to share Baker's eye, ear and paw infections have resolved, but it will take more time for his coat to come back to normal. Until then, Baker will be rocking sweaters to keep warm and will likely need continued medicated baths and possible medication in the future.
