The Humane Society of Ventura County is a compassionate care shelter and non-profit organization dedicated to the protection and adoption of animals in need throughout Ventura County.
It doesn't get much cuter than our girl Baby! Baby is a Shiba Inu and Terrier mix who was transferred from Ventura County Animal Services last week. Baby is listed as 14 years old, which is hard to believe with all the energy and spunk this little girl has!

On Saturday, August 15th, 19 animals (9 dogs and 10 cats) found their forever homes. A very special thank you to NBC News for orchestrating this wonderful event. Over 18,000 shelter animals found homes across the nation!
Last week the HSVC Humane Officer Division had a hard earned victory in court when a Ventura County jury found a Simi Valley woman guilty of animal cruelty in connection with her care of a horse. On February 14, 2014 officers Hoffman and Mrvichen responded to an anonymous call about a emaciated palomino horse named Dandylion. Officers and a veterinarian examined Dandylion and it was determined that the horse was in imminent peril due to a lack of adequate food and care. The Humane Society of Ventura County seized Dandylion and he has remained in their care ever since. Dandylion is up to a healthy 765 pounds from his previous weight of 570 pounds at the time of his rescue. The horses previous owner could face up to a year in the county jail and probation with terms that would limit her ability to own any horses in the future.
This Saturday, August 15th, hundreds of shelters across the country are taking part in a nationwide push to find homes for pets in need. The Humane Society of Ventura County will be participating in this one-day adoption event at our location here in Ojai.
Meet your new best friend Zane! On August 01, 2015 Humane Society staff pulled 5 dogs from Ventura County Animal Services. One of those pups was this sweet little guy named Zane. Zane is a one year old male, buff colored Cocker Spaniel and is just as sweet as can be.
Imagine you are walking through the parking lot after a day of shopping and you come across a car that has a dog in it. It’s a blistering 100 degree day and the windows are rolled up. You notice the dog is panting heavily. What do you do?
This little man is Shadow! Shadow is a 3 year old Chihuahua/Schipperke mix who is blind in his left eye from a previous accident. Shadow was surrendered to the shelter by his owners because they did not have the resources to care for him. Shadow's lack of sight in his left eye seems to have very little impact on him and how he experiences the world! He can maneuver just fine and we have not witnessed any instances of him bumping into things or being "clumsy". Dogs can be extremely resilient and can adapt quickly to changes of all kinds!
Who can resist a kitten! Most people melt like a Popsicle on the 4th of July when they see them. Sometimes though, we adopt one and after a few nights of no sleep, clearing them off the counters, detangling them off the couch we ask, why!? Why?! Kittens are often brought to shelters because their human adopters were not prepared to bring them into their home. We ask all you new kitten parents to take a deep breath and make a kitten plan!
