BIRTHDAY BASH - 2015

Thank you to everyone who attended our 83rd Birthday Celebration and Open House! It was great to see so many familiar faces (both human and canine), make new friends, and meet new supporters. It was a beautiful day out in Ojai, the perfect day to celebrate, and here at the shelter we have a lot to be thankful for! A special thank you to our friends and supporters who helped put the event together and our volunteers who helped the event be a success! We had an arts and crafts table, where folks of all ages could design a bandanna for a shelter dog or make a bird feeder to take home. Our Humane Educator, Dawn Reily, was also there with her pack of critters for guests to hold, ask questions, and learn about the different services our education department offers. Humane Education became one of our main priorities in the late 80′s. We have visited thousands of school classrooms, children and youth organizations, service clubs and various functions promoting the protection of and kindness to all living beings and our environment. Children are never too young to learn respect for all life.

OPEN HOUSE - Tomorrow!

Come join us this Saturday for an Open House in celebration of 83 years of service! Stop by anytime between 10-5 on Saturday, June 6th to get a behind the scenes peek at the shelter. You can ask staff questions, interact with animals, tour the facility and clinic, participate in our scavenger hunt, and learn about our different volunteer opportunities.

GOOD LUCK COPPER!

Copper is off to West Coast Equine in Somis for his surgery! Let's all wish him the best of luck! Thank you to everyone who donated last week to Copper's surgery fund. Because of you we are able to get these animals in need the best care they deserve. Copper should be back at the shelter in a few days and will hopefully be available for adoption soon! GOOD LUCK COPPER!

JUNE IS ADOPT-A-CAT MONTH!

It’s that time again! Every year for Adopt-A-Cat Month we have a “two for one” special on ALL our cats and kittens. We find that when you have two cats/kittens they play together instead of having one kitten that will need to play with your nose in the middle of the night. Having more than one cat gives them the opportunity to “be cats” by socializing and playing with each other; this means they are less likely to be destructive or engage in other problematic behavior.

Rattlesnake Safety for Dogs

This time of year the great outdoors seem to be constantly on our minds. Spending time outside, hiking, swimming, camping, whatever it is that calls to us is always more fun with our canine friends by our side. We are fortunate here in Southern California to have beautiful weather year round, but our warmer weather also makes for the perfect climate for venomous snakes. Spring through Fall is rattlesnake season and a hike on a beautiful day can take a turn for the worse for your four legged friend if they encounter one of these dangerous snakes. Their curious nature can get them into trouble. According to the Animal Medical Center of southern California, dogs are 20 times more likely to be bit and 25 times more likely to die then people are from snake bites.

PET OF THE WEEK - CHESPI

This little guy is Chespi! Chespi is a male, tan Chihuahua and is about 2 years old. He was surrendered to our Humane Officers in the field because the owners were not able to provide him with the appropriate care. He has been at the HSVC since Jan 07, 2015. Chespi has made great progress. He gets along with other dogs and needs a little time (or a couple treats) to warm up. Humane Officer Hoffman has been working with him closely both on and off site to ensure he is socializing well. Hoffman says "Chespi loves to snuggle in bed and loves toys!". Chespi can be shy at frist, but if you ask to spend time with him in his pen, he will quickly steal your heart! Come meet sweet Chespi today!

HELP RUSTY FIND HIS FOREVER HOME!

PLEASE SHARE! AVAILABLE: Rusty is a gorgeous 9 month old Kelpie/Husky mix who has been at the shelter since April 23, 2015. Rusty is a LOT of fun! He loves to fetch and knows some basic commands (sit, down, and come) but will need lots of training to keep this big, strong boy happy and healthy. We do not have any background on Rusty, though he did come in with 5 other dogs and seemed to like them. We do not know how he is with cats and would recommend a family without small children. Rusty has very nice leash manners, especially for his age and size! He will need a home with a very secure yard and lots of time to spend running and playing. Rusty is even more stunning in person, come meet him today!

PET OF THE WEEK - MILLIE

This sweet girl is Millie. Mille has been at the HSVC since January 27th, 2015. Millie is 10 months old and you can find her with her buddies in the kitten room. We do not know anything about Millie's past but she has been a great girl since her time at the shelter!
