HSVC Goes to UC Davis for CVET Horse Training

In May, Equine Manager Christina Malleck and Humane Investigations Director Kendra King were selected from a pool of individuals to participate in UC Davis CVET’s first Train-the-Trainer Equine Handling Workshop. CVET, or California Veterinary Emergency Team, is administered by UC Davis One Health Institute within the School of Veterinary Medicine. They offer training and support to agencies, individuals, and organizations to aid animals during emergencies. CVET developed the Train-the-Trainer Equine Handling Workshop after an overwhelming interest in the program from across the state.

Tips for Keeping Your Pets Cool this Summer

A heat advisory has been issued for most of SoCal, with temperatures in the valleys and lower mountains that could reach triple-digit temperatures. Temperatures will continue to soar throughout the summer, so please keep yourselves and your furry friends cool! Dogs do not sweat like humans do. Instead, they release heat through their tongues, noses, and footpads. Animals kept in a car, yard, or dog run without protection from the heat and without enough water are more likely to suffer from heat stroke than humans. Thursday, June 20th, is the first day of summer, and as the weather is starting to get warmer, it's important to know the risk heat poses to our furry friends. Excessive time in hot weather can spell danger for your animals. Check out these tips from our friends at the ASPCA and The Humane Society of the United States to prevent your pet from overheating this season.

Tunes, Tours, and Treats: HSVC Celebrates Birthdays of Shelter Animals

June is the Cat's Meow!

June is National Adopt-A-Cat Month and we are celebrating with two promotions for our feline friends! HSVC is offering a $10 spay/neuter special for all cats and kittens all month long. Visit our website for more information or call our clinic at (805) 646-7849 to schedule an appointment. Note that space is limited and this promotion is for Ventura County residents only. Shelter kitties still looking for their forever homes are available for a reduced adoption fee this month! Adult cats (aged 6-months and older) are now half-priced at just $60 and kittens are two for the price of one at $150. Help us make a difference this National Adopt-A-Cat Month!

Art Camp Tickets Have Been Reduced!

Humane Education for Youth (HEY) Summer Camp at HSVC will begin with Animal Art Creations on Wednesday, June 19th. There are still tickets available for the community to sign up for these art classes that run from June 19th - 21st from 10 am - 12:30 pm. These classes are being offered at a reduced price of $20 per day (originally $45 per day) due to a generous in-kind donation from the National Charity League (NCL). The NCL local chapter donated all the art supplies needed to create these animal-themed art pieces planned for these camps. Thank you, NCL! A Look Back at ASAP Working Cats' Training Session for HSVC

HSVC welcomed Mary and Belinda from ASAP Cats to the shelter this past week for a presentation about their Working Cats Program. HSVC is eager to start our own working cat program soon, and our staff was thrilled to learn from experts in the field! A working cat, also known as a barn cat, is a cat that is employed to hunt and control pests in places like barns, farms, warehouses, and other properties. They are often cats unsuitable for traditional adoption programs but can thrive in an outdoor environment where they can work alongside humans. With Mary and Belinda's guidance, our staff learned how to acclimate working cats in their new homes and what to look for when matching a working cat with the right property.

Ventura County's Sheriff Fryhoff Visits HSVC

The HSVC was thrilled to welcome Ventura County's Sheriff Jim Fryhoff to the shelter last week! He and his team were given a full tour of our 4.4-acre property in Ojai and interacted with several of our adoptable animals. Sheriff Fryhoff will return to HSVC on Saturday, June 1st, to co-emcee our 92nd Birthday Bash fundraiser dinner with actor Anson Williams. We couldn't be more excited for the paw-ty!
