Stars, Stripes, and Safe Pets

Fireworks, barbecues, and celebrations might be fun for us, but for pets, the 4th of July can be a stressful and even dangerous time. Every year, shelters see an increase in lost pets due to fireworks and loud noises. At the HSVC, we want your furry family members to stay safe, calm, and home this holiday. Here are some helpful tips to keep your animals happy and protected this Independence Day.
Fireworks: Pets and fireworks don't mix! The loud noises and flashes can cause intense fear and anxiety, often leading pets to bolt or hide. Keep your animals indoors in a quiet, secure room. Close the windows, draw the curtains, and consider turning on the TV or playing calming music to help drown out the noise. Never bring pets to fireworks displays, and be sure to check yards for debris afterward.
Heatstroke: July temperatures can soar, and animals are especially vulnerable to the heat. Always provide shade and fresh water for pets at outdoor gatherings. Avoid walking on hot pavement, which can burn paw pads, and never leave pets in a parked car, even for a short time. For extra hydration, try adding ice cubes to their water bowl!
Identification & Collars: Make sure your pet is always wearing a secure collar with a current ID tag. Microchips offer added security if a collar slips off. HSVC offers microchipping for just $25, including registration. Plus, we’re offering FREE ID tags now through July 3rd to help prevent lost pets this holiday. Call us at 805-646-6505 to schedule microchipping or stop by for a tag!
Food & Drinks: Party food is not pet food! Keep pets away from tables and trash, where they may find hazardous items such as bones, skewers, onions, grapes, chocolate, or alcohol. These can all be toxic to animals. Stick to your pet’s regular diet and always supervise them when they are around human food. For a full list of potentially dangerous foods for your pets, visit the ASPCA website.
Insect Repellant & Sunscreen: Never apply human insect repellent or sunscreen to your pet. Products containing DEET or zinc oxide can be toxic if licked or ingested. Look for pet-safe versions if needed, and keep citronella candles and coils well out of reach.
The HSVC will be CLOSED on Friday, July 4th, in observance of the holiday. Services will resume at 10 am on Saturday, July 5th. Please plan accordingly for tags, microchipping, or other services!
