Thank You St. Mary's Catholic School!

Special thanks to St. Mary's Catholic School in Spring Lake, Michigan for their donation of over $1900 to the Humane Society of Ventura County! Each year, the staff, faculty, and students of the school choose a nonprofit to make a donation in connection to the celebration of the Feast of St Francis of Assisi, which takes place on October 4th. The feast commemorates the life of St Francis, who was born in the 12th century and is the Catholic Church's patron saint of animals and the environment.

HSVC Partners with Santa Maria Animal Shelter in Dog Hoarding Case

On Thursday, October 22nd, Santa Barbara County Animal Services officials investigated a call from a concerned citizen regarding a potential case of dog hoarding. Upon arrival, the officials were met with over 100 Chihuahuas and Chihuahua mixed dogs inside the Lompoc home. The owner soon decided it was in the animals’ best interest to be surrendered over to officials to find new homes.

Angus' Journey - Thank You Search Dog Foundation

One-year-old Angus was brought to the HSVC as a stray in early August. A handsome black Lab/Retriever mix, Angus loved playing with toys and running around in our agility yard. It was as if the peppy pup had endless amounts of energy! After noticing Angus’ high toy drive, a staff member contacted our friends at Search Dog Foundation (SDF) located in Santa Paula to see if he might be a good fit for their program. SDF is a national organization that recruits and trains rescue dogs and then partners them with firefighters and first responders.

Happy National Feral Cat Day!

October 16th is National Feral Cat Day! This is a day dedicated to raising awareness about feral cats, promoting TNR (trap, neuter, release), and recognizing those who care for them. The HSVC is committed to reducing the overpopulation of feral and stray cats in our community. Thank you to all the feral cat trappers in Ventura County who help us accomplish our goal!

In honor of Vet Tech Appreciation Week, Volunteer Coordinator Audra Lucas has organized a safe and creative way to show appreciation for our Vet Techs! We invite you to come out to the shelter and chalk on our sidewalks a message to our three hard-working Vet Techs/Assistants: Christina, Natalie, and Megan! Please make sure to stay six feet from others and wear masks at all times when stopping by the shelter, safety first.
