Star's Journey to Recovery

In January of 2022, Humane Officer Utter responded to a complaint regarding two dogs at an address in Oxnard. The complaint stated that there was a severely matted small dog kept inside of the house and a husky living in the side yard of the residence. After discussing concerns regarding the care of the dogs, the owner decided to release ownership of both animals to the Humane Society.

Donate now to Celebrate Help a Horse Day!

Tuesday, April 26th, is national Help a Horse Day! This day is in honor of the first-ever arrest for horse mistreatment in 1866 after ASPCA founder Henry Bergh stopped a cart driver from beating his horse. As the only organization in Ventura County with Humane Officers investigating equine abuse and cruelty, this holiday holds a special place in our hearts.

HSVC Welcomes Volunteers Back to the Shelter!

This week was Volunteer Appreciation week, so what better way to end the celebration than to finally start accepting volunteers back to our shelter! After two years of (not so) patiently waiting, the HSVC is thrilled to welcome back all our volunteers. We are so grateful for your patience through this pandemic, and we are happy to be at a place where we can start accepting volunteers back to our facility!

Thank you, Frank Salguero, for 32 Years of Service!

At the Humane Society of Ventura County, we are lucky to have dedicated and compassionate staff and volunteers and our longest-term team member has been both! Frank Salguero, a native of Ojai, began working for us in April of 1990 and after his retirement chose to volunteer with us 2-5 days a week. He has become a beloved member of the HSVC family over the years and we are truly grateful for his dedication. Thank you, Frank, for your 32 years of service to Ventura County’s homeless animals!

Mila Takes a Field Trip to the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation!

Four-month-old Mila went on a field trip to visit our friends at the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation (SDF) last Friday! SDF is a national nonprofit that recruits dogs from shelters across the country and trains them to be search and rescue dogs. They look specifically for young, high-energy breeds that demonstrate tenacity, boldness, and an excessive toy drive. While Mila didn't quite have what it takes to become a search dog, she still had a blast visiting the SDF campus and meeting their staff!

Join Us for a FREE Pet Vaccine Clinic on April 28th!

Save the date! We are hosting another FREE pet vaccine clinic on Thursday, April 28th at the shelter, located at 402 Bryant St. in Ojai! We are offering free FVRCP (upper respiratory) vaccines for cats and free DHPP (distemper/parvo) vaccines for dogs. Walk-ins are welcome from 12-3 pm. First come, first served while supplies last!
