It’s that time of year again! This weekend our country celebrates its independence with food, fun, and of course, fireworks! While these spectacular displays in the sky may be the highlight of our holiday, they might be the exact opposite for our furry friends. Fireworks often cause fear, stress, and panic to our animal family members. To help ensure that even our four-legged friends enjoy the holiday, check out these tips from the ASPCA.
Recently a member of the public brought in three orphaned opossum babies to the HSVC. While we do not take in wildlife, the opossums were briefly under our care until members of the local Ojai Raptor Center were able to pick them up from the shelter.
Summer is here and the 4th of July is just around the corner! While you may be celebrating the holiday a little differently this year, it is still very important to remember these dos and don'ts to keep your pets safe.
Animal Adventure Camp at Home is in full swing at the Humane Society of Ventura County! Campers are tuning in virtually for crafts, games, cooking, animal presentations, and more!

So before you grab the clippers, check out these tips for grooming your pet this season.
The HSVC was delighted to receive several hundred pounds of food, treats, and a large financial donation from the Realtors of the Ojai Valley Helping Our Community group. All the food and financial support will go towards the HSVC Pet Food Bank at the shelter and the Pantry 4 Paws program food pantries throughout Ventura County.
On May 14, 2020, a good samaritan called in a concern to our Humane Officers regarding a skinny horse on a property in Ventura County. Officer King met with the owner who decided it was in the horse’s best interest to be signed over to the HSVC to find a new home. Upon arrival at the shelter, the Thoroughbred mare was affectionately named Jasmine, Jazzy for short, after the way she kicked up her feet as if she were dancing.
