Jack Crosses the Rainbow Bridge

By Humane Society of Ventura County

We are deeply saddened to share that HSVC shelter horse Jack has crossed the Rainbow Bridge. He was loved by so many at the shelter and will be greatly missed.Nineteen-year-old Jack was surrendered in the field to our Humane Officers in early August of 2023. He was given an intake exam upon arriving at the shelter where it was discovered he was struggling with laminitis. Jack was taken to Humphrey Giacopuzzi & Associates Equine Hospital to receive treatment for his condition and began showing signs of improvement. However, on Friday, October 6th, Jack's coffin bone rotated even more to the point where he was unable to put weight on his leg. He was transported back to the Humphrey Giacopuzzi & Associates for further examination. Under the expert advisement of hospital staff, we made the incredibly difficult decision to humanely end Jack's suffering. We appreciate your support and understanding as our shelter staff grieve during this difficult time.

HSVC Friends- Girl Scout Troop 61690 Bronze Award Project

By Angie Sagliani

Kitten season happens each year in the months of May through October, but it can sometimes last year-round. This year HSVC has had many kittens arrive at the shelter in need of care. The shelter’s Foster Coordinator, Cheney, juggles our community’s kitten care while also gathering the supplies needed for young fur babies. HSVC is very grateful to Girl Scout Troop #61690 for seeing the need for supplies for our kitten foster program! These supplies are a crucial part of the foster care program to ensure our foster parents have the tools needed to care for orphaned litters. Our beloved foster families help the kittens thrive and eventually return to the shelter to find their new forever homes. Supplies can be donated to the shelter and will help keep down the financial cost of caring for our community’s animals. Visit our Foster Kitten Amazon Wishlist if you would like to support our efforts!

Donate Now to Support Jack and Prieto!

By Humane Society of Ventura County

We need your help! Two of our shelter horses, Jack (left) and Prieto (right), were recently taken to Humphrey Giacopuzzi & Associates Equine Hospital for emergency care. Both horses are recovering well, but the expense of their medical care totaled roughly $4,000. As a private nonprofit, we rely solely on the generosity of our community to provide emergency care to animals in need. Please consider supporting Jack, Prieto, and the welfare of all future shelter animals by donating to our emergency medical care fund.

Thank you, Sage and Ava!

By Humane Society of Ventura County

The HSVC would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to 7-year-olds Sage and Ava for their dedication to helping shelter animals in need! The pair stopped by the shelter Saturday afternoon to donate the profits they collected from their lemonade and cookie stand, a whopping $313! According to their parents, the girls hand-picked and juiced the lemons, made the lemonade themselves and sold it at their neighborhood stand. They also donated some blankets to keep the animals warm during winter. This is the second year Ava and Sage have helped us make a difference in the lives of homeless shelter animals, and we couldn't be more grateful for their support! Keep up the great work ladies!  As a private nonprofit, our shelter does not receive any funding from the government or any other national animal welfare organization. We rely solely on the generosity of animal lovers like Sage and Ava to continue providing our vital services to the community. If you would like to support our efforts, please click the button below to donate now. Our shelter is also always in need of clean blankets, towels, pet toys, and unopened pet food. Donations can be dropped off in person at the shelter, located at 402 Bryant St. in Ojai, CA, any time during business hours between 10 am - 5 pm.  Donate Now

HSVC Attends CSUCI Community Engagement Fair ‘23

By Angie Sagliani

California State University of Channel Islands (CSUCI) hosted a Community Engagement Fair for their student body in early September. This was the first time HSVC attended the event at the CI campus along with about 40 other local nonprofits and student clubs. The wonderful team at the Center for Community Engagement sent us a special invitation to participate. The fair proved to be a great opportunity to showcase programs, volunteering opportunities, and the educational partnership with CSUCI.
